Are fears about privacy on the Internet justified?

State surveillance via the Internet is already a practice in China.

The Chinese government can instruct companies to show them the personal data of internet users. Tencent, China’s largest internet-related service conglomerate, has a policy whereby it retains the right to hand data over to authorities when compelled to do so.
